That\u2019s what the congenial professional duo of V\u00e9ronique Fontaine and Prune Lieutier did. Together, they founded La Bo\u00eete \u00e0 pitons, a company that produces and publishes interactive books, a new format on the border between print and screen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis project has been near and dear to me for a long time,\u201d says V\u00e9ronique, whose publishing house Fonfon produces traditional books for youths. \u201cI wanted to get into the digital book market but with something more substantial than a simple static e-book. The problem was that I had very little experience. And one day: TA-DA! I received a resume.\u201d It was Prune\u2019s. She was doing a post-graduate degree on interactive books and was looking for a traineeship opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<a name='numavideo'><\/a><div class='numa-video-wrapper with-cover'><div class='video-cover-overlay'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Fonfon-interactif.png?w=1152\" \/><i id='overlay-play' class='overlay-play'><\/i><\/div><iframe id='numavideo' allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' src='http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/221436172?api=1&amp;title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=fa1164&amp;mw=1004&amp;mh=564' frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe has all the skills I don\u2019t have!\u201d thought V\u00e9ronique. They met and got along like a house on fire. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe realized just how strong we would be if we worked together.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The similarity between their project and Prune\u2019s area of research allowed them to get a grant from Mitacs, a company that brings together universities and businesses. \u201cThat enabled us to work on a grant request for the Canada Media Fund,\u201d says Prune. \u201cI was the one who received their acceptance e-mail. End of day Thursday or Friday. I called V\u00e9ronique and told her we got it. Her reaction was very funny: she asked me if I was kidding her. Right from the start, they partnered with Christian Lebel, of Akufen studio, who became their technology director. \u201cChristian is our favourite geek,\u201d say both V\u00e9ronique and Prune. \u201cWe dreamt of unicorns and rainbows and all sorts of gadgetry,\u201d confides V\u00e9ronique. \u201cAnd Christian, who understands all the programming involved, brought us back down to earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The final product is fun and multifaceted: kids can read the book with or without narration, create their own stories by reusing objects and characters encountered previously, and record their own voices to bring their stories to life.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1895\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1895\" style=\"width: 1201px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1895 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Livre_Petit-1.png?resize=1152%2C647\" alt=\"\" width=\"1152\" height=\"647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Livre_Petit-1.png?w=1201&amp;ssl=1 1201w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Livre_Petit-1.png?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Livre_Petit-1.png?resize=1024%2C575&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Livre_Petit-1.png?resize=500%2C281&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1152px) 100vw, 1152px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For the moment, there are 3 titles in the Fonfon Interactif collection.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a fun application for kids, and parents are impressed with it. The project, however, was full of challenges for La Bo\u00eete \u00e0 pitons, starting with distribution channels. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to break through on the Google and Apple platforms,\u201d states Prune. \u201cWhat\u2019s more, we can\u2019t enter library collections.\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two entrepreneurs, however, have unwavering faith in their project and plenty of enthusiasm \u2013 and they will forge ahead against all odds!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; To carve out a place in your industry, you sometimes need to enter untapped markets.
