{"id":2908,"date":"2018-06-13T12:06:29","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T16:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/numa.media\/?p=2908\/"},"modified":"2018-06-13T12:06:29","modified_gmt":"2018-06-13T16:06:29","slug":"learning-through-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/numa.media\/en\/learning-through-play\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning through play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Using the language of games to get youths to deal with serious subjects \u2013 this is an approach that studio CREO strongly believes in.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tagville is a game designed to help students aged 9 to 14 (from the end of primary to the start of secondary school) develop their financial literacy. \u201cWe\u2019re talking to the digital generation,\u201d says Caroline Julien, President of CREO, the studio that created this product. \u201cKids expect us to address them in their language, so to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='numa-video-wrapper no-cover'><iframe id='numavideo' allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' src='http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/273504950?api=1&amp;title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=fa1164' frameborder='0'><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Initially, CREO received a request from the Paul G\u00e9rin-Lajoie foundation. \u201cWe had to come up with interesting and fun ways of delivering this kind of content to our target audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tagville is set in a futurist world. The \u201cTagtout\u201d family decide to help a group of musicians who would like to acquire new instruments so as to put on a much-awaited concert. Players must make the right financial decisions to save enough money to make these purchases, without compromising the family\u2019s happiness.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2741 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tagville2-300x149.png?resize=300%2C149\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tagville2.png?resize=300%2C149&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tagville2.png?resize=1024%2C509&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tagville2.png?resize=500%2C249&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/numa.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/tagville2.png?w=1541&amp;ssl=1 1541w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To that end, the students must distinguish between such notions as well-being, needs, and wants. In addition, they must manage a budget in accordance with income and expenses and develop their entrepreneurial spirit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pay more attention when we\u2019re immersed in an environment we like,\u201d says Patrick Gleeson, a scriptwriter with CREO. \u201cIn a school setting, it\u2019s more fun to play Tagville than to listen to a teacher lecturing or read a booklet. We listened to them and co-created this game with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tagville was well-received by its target community. \u201cWe got feedback from classes that tried it out. The teachers found out that a game is a fun and lively way of dealing with, say, complex subjects,\u201d says Caroline Julien. \u201cThe kids really enjoy it! That\u2019s what we like to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her view, the future of teaching using digital platforms is extremely promising. \u201cDigital technology not only allows you to transmit knowledge, but also motivates students and makes learning more fun and more effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has come to this conclusion based on studies carried out on other games created by CREO. \u201cWe\u2019ve produced titles in collaboration with science education specialists who gauged the impact of games on learning,\u201d she states by way of explanation. \u201cThe results really astounded us. Apparently, students learn four or five times faster using games than traditional learning methods.
